“Law” is the foundation of our constitution. In India the law education is the only legal education.
Students who have passed this degree course are designated as the “Lawyer” and this have to be done before their entry as lawyer in the court practice.
The law education in India has been offered by the various colleges & universities and at various academic levels like UG and PG.
1987 was the year when The Law as an education started in India as a three-year degree program granted under the Advocate Act, 1961. The Bar Council of India also called as BCI is the main regulatory body for Law education and licensing.
The “Law Commission of India” In the year 1985 has decided to establish a University for Law Education to raise the academic standard of the legal profession SO THAT INDIAN JUDICIARY SYSTEM SHOULD HAVE GOOD LAWYERS respecting the profession. Subsequently the first law University in India was established by the name of as “National Law School of India University” in Bangalore also known as the “NLS”. Now It was the time when the first LLB degree was started.
Career & Courses after 12th in Law
Law is one of the most career-oriented courses after Senior secondary. In our country, the student is free to pursue the legal degree after the completion of the graduation in any domain. Below are the degrees of legal education in India.
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) – 3 years
The LLB takes the 3 year as the duration of the course and it is the most common degree of law education.
Integrated undergraduate degrees – BBA. LL.B, B.A. LL.B., B.Sc. LL.B., B.Com LL.B – 5 years
One who wishes to save a year and do the integrated course can opt for the admission in 5 year integrated course after the completion of senior secondary exams. These entrances require lot of effort and one has to join a coaching institute to get the guidance and learn the tricks to crack the entrance and competition level is also quite high.
- Master of Laws (LL.M.) – one/two years
People are mostly not aware of this as LLM is the master degree in legal education having one or two-year duration depends on the university.
- Master of Business Law
The MBL is the master degree in legal education basically for the students who want tobe part of companies with the specialization in business law having one or two-year duration.
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
There is a good prospect for PhD after the legal education. Most of the highly reputed autonomous institution provides the PhD programmes.
- Integrated MBL-LLM/ MBA-LLM – 3years
One who wants to do the integrated course with business as the specialization can opt for the MBA-LLM or MBL-LLM. It is a 3 year degree course after the completion of the LLB.
